A new 25,000 sf state-of-the-art facility, the NDAES Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory is the largest of its kind in the Upper Midwest. Its veterinary diagnostic facilities support both the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station and North Dakota State University, tending to veterinarians, animal owners and producers, and the general public.
The building program is broad: apart from having individual laboratories for toxicology, bacteriology, virology, molecular diagnostic, pathology, parasitology, and serology, it also houses a BSL-3 laboratory, which equips NDAES/NDSU with a space in which to contain highly infections agents. Three loading docks allow the lab to receive large animal carcasses from surrounding farmland 24/7. The large necropsy space is outfitted with a 2-ton overhead crane, which connects storage refrigerators and an in-house incinerator. The building also houses offices and support spaces to the staff.
Zerr Berg Architects was the architect-of-record; CannonDesign brought the lab expertise to the design team. I was involved as a project manager from the interview stage through the completion of Construction Documents, coordinating a large team of consultants and stakeholders throughout. I was responsible for creating the BIM production plan for the design team, as was the internal project architect for Zerr Berg. The building opened in 2017.
